Romantic Getaway? Here’s Three Destinations Throughout California
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the anxiety to plan a romantic getaway rapidly increases, which we want to help with. The Golden State has many iconic destinations, but what about those unique, hidden gems off the beaten path that make California so amazing? Whether you are going on your first weekend getaway, wedding anniversary trip, or a Galentine’s retreat, we at Visit California have three unique destinations for your upcoming trip.
Salvation Mountain, Calipatria
An hour and a half from Palm Springs, artist Leonard Knight created artwork seen as a tribute to God with the message “God Is Love,” nestled on the side of the mountain below a large cross. The mountain features many biblical quotes and imagery, including sculptures, trees, suns, animals, and flowers. Although the artwork was created through religion, it is now a unique piece of art that intrigues visitors around Palm Springs. You are your travel companion who can walk around the artwork, which takes about one hour, and take many romantic photos throughout the mountain. Make sure to bring some water, charged phones and cameras, and snacks, as visitors can eat next to the mountain to continue to soak up the artwork.

Santa Catalina Island
Santa Catalina Island, located near Long Beach, has an illustrious history, ranging from Europeans arriving to claim the island for the Spanish Empire to William Wrigley Jr. investing millions into the city of Avalon, creating a lavish city that brings world-class resorts, marine biology research opportunities, and one-day trips to Californians. The island is a great romantic getaway, especially at one of the spa-based resorts that allows a mix of tourism and luxury. Take the boat from Long Beach to Avalon, about an hour’s ride, and enjoy fresh seafood on the beach, a lavish amount of history, and a relaxing evening with your significant other.

Sonoma Valley Balloon Ride
Sonoma Valley is an excellent escape for wine tastings, beautiful forest scenery, and luxurious restaurants in collaboration with some of the most infamous wineries throughout California. One great way to see Sonoma Valley at its prime is through a balloon ride early in the morning. Next to the Sonoma airport, Sonoma Ballooning offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience with their trips throughout the valley. Seeing illustrious views of Sonoma Valley, historic downtown Sonoma, the rolling hills of Petaluma, outlying views of the San Francisco Bay, Napa Valley, and more makes the balloon ride even more special.

California is a unique state with various great places to visit surrounding Valentine’s Day. We at Visit California hope you visit one of these amazing destinations off the beaten path celebrating you and your loved ones this year.
